This article I found caught my eye because it talks about using the game "I Spy" along with audio input of spoken words, and the result the scientist at Indiana University are finding is that children are able to identify pictures quicker that they are able to identify words. The reasoning the scientist say is that a different function of the brain is being brought into play.
This research provides data for the investigation of children with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and delayed speech.

Very interesting. I used to buy I spy books for my kids when they were young to help them know where to find and object and be able to learn how to read. They are very good books to teach children.
